Say “Cheese” to Shakabooth, a new family owned business in Hawaii.
By Fernando Pacheco
The shaka sign is a common non-verbal greeting in Hawaii. Locals use it to convey the “Aloha Spirit,” gesturing friendship and understanding between diversity. It’s used with old friends and fresh acquaintances. The same spirit can be said to describe the sentiment in photographs taken at local events. Sometimes they include family members, others include guests that just met because they were seated at the same table. Whatever the case may be, everyone is accepted and comes together in a photograph to capture and share the celebration.
Whether it’s a wedding, birthday party, or family reunion, imagine a predetermined theme to all the photos of the event. Finally, there is a service that provides a customized consistency to an event’s photos while also expressing guests’ creativity.
Owned by the Miller Ohana, Shakabooth is believed to be the first of it’s kind in Hawaii. The innovative booth provides a customized theme as well as a fun activity for guests throughout the duration of an event. What really sets it apart from any other photography service is that the booth is remote-controlled, allowing guests to choose their own poses, as well as preview them prior to actually taking the shot. The absence of a photographer leaves users with a comfortable atmosphere, giving way to encapsulate an intimate moment between friends and family.
Marina Miller, wife and mother of the Miller tribe, is no stranger to the camera. She has been providing professional photography to weddings and other events since 2007. Jason Miller, the “papa bear” of the group has been organizing events in Hawaii’s entertainment industry since 1995. Combined with their 4 sons, they form an ohana that is passionate about having fun in life. They believe that life is too short to go without having some really silly photos of yourself.
While having fun with running a local company, they also take pride in using sustainable materials and supporting the community. Shakabooth is currently donating its services to fundraisers supporting the environment and recovery efforts in Japan or Haiti. With that said, it looks like the “Aloha Spirit” is alive and well in Shakabooth’s photos, services and business plan.
